DTC fault-code solution

Professional DTC fault-code analysis

DTC analysis does not mean blindly suppressing warning systems. The aim is a clear assessment of the code, the conditions that trigger it and its cause.

MG AutoTech distinguishes active, stored and intermittent faults and checks whether software, sensors, mechanical issues or previous work are relevant.

DTC fault-code analysis

Direct answer

What does DTC analysis cover?

We consider the fault code, control unit, status, operating data, frequency, existing modifications and whether the cause is a technical fault or unsuitable software calibration.

Screenshots or reports showing the full code, control unit, status and freeze-frame data help us assess your enquiry.

  • Generic and manufacturer-specific codes
  • Active, stored or intermittent
  • Freeze-frame and live data
  • Documented recommendation

Assessment

How to recognise when this service is needed.

Typical situations

  • A fault code keeps returning
  • A fault cannot be cleared permanently
  • A workshop has suggested several possible causes
  • A control unit logs intermittent DTCs
  • Codes appear after modifications or repairs

Possible causes

  • Implausible sensor reading
  • Wiring or communication issue
  • Mechanical fault
  • Unsuitable software calibration
  • Existing modifications
  • Secondary fault caused by another control unit
  • A reset or adaptation has not been carried out

A fault code is not the cause itself

A DTC describes what a control unit has detected. It does not automatically identify a faulty part or establish whether replacement is appropriate.

Modern networked vehicles in particular can develop secondary faults that can only be interpreted correctly once the faults have been prioritised properly.

Assessing the software connection

Existing modifications, removed hardware or unsuitable calibrations can sometimes be part of the problem. This needs to be documented openly.

MG AutoTech does not promote blanket suppression of warning systems; we assess what is technically and legally appropriate.

Process

From vehicle details to a technical decision.

  1. 01

Record the vehicle details, display message and previous repairs.

  2. 02

Read the fault memories of all relevant control units.

  3. 03

Check live data, freeze-frame readings and whether the values are plausible.

  4. 04

Distinguish between mechanical, electrical and software-related causes.

  5. 05

Explain the appropriate next step, the work involved and the risks.

  6. 06

Carry out a final check after the work or recommendation.

For your enquiry

These vehicle details help us assess the situation.

  • Make, model and year of manufacture
  • Engine, power output and transmission
  • VIN, if needed to identify the exact control unit or equipment
  • Current fault codes or diagnostic report
  • Photo of the warning message on the display
  • Details of modifications, repairs or previous software work
  • Complete fault report including control unit, status and freeze-frame data
  • Details of modifications or removed components

Technical limits

What needs clarifying before work starts.

  • Safety- and emissions-related faults are not hidden indiscriminately.
  • A single code without operating-condition data is often not enough to identify the cause reliably.
  • Intermittent faults may require a test drive to reproduce the issue or further measurements.
  • Software is only part of the solution when the technical cause supports it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about DTC fault-code analysis.

What does DTC mean?

DTC stands for Diagnostic Trouble Code: a fault code stored by a control unit.

Does a fault code reliably identify a faulty part?

No. A code indicates a detected problem, but does not automatically identify the component that needs replacing.

Can MG AutoTech permanently clear fault codes?

The focus is on finding the cause. Safety, emissions and protection functions are not suppressed indiscriminately.

Why is freeze-frame data important?

The readings show the conditions under which the code was logged and help identify the cause.

What is the difference between active and intermittent faults?

Active faults are present now. Intermittent faults have been detected but may not be present at the time of the check.

Can a tuning file cause faults?

Yes, if it does not match the vehicle, hardware or protection functions. This is assessed during the analysis.
