NOx sensor diagnostics Stuttgart

NOx sensor checks in Stuttgart: test before replacing

A NOx code may concern the sensor, but also its power supply, heater, data communication, wiring, an exhaust leak or the wider SCR system.

MG AutoTech considers the installation position, live reading, operating state and electrical diagnostics together before a sensor is replaced or adapted.

NOx sensor diagnostics

Direct answer

How is a NOx fault assessed?

First, we establish the fault status, operating data and affected sensor's position. Power supply, heating, communication and the live reading are then checked for plausibility against operating conditions.

The sensor measures within a chain of systems. Possible exhaust leaks, SCR dosing and—where available—the relationship between readings before and after the catalyst are therefore considered.

  • Establish sensor position and fault status
  • Check power supply, heating and communication
  • Check the live reading against the operating state
  • Include the exhaust path and related SCR systems

Assessment

How to recognise when this service is needed.

Typical situations

  • NOx sensor or signal fault in the fault memory
  • Engine, exhaust or SCR warning
  • Reading appears fixed or implausible for the operating state
  • Communication or heater fault is stored
  • Fault returns after clearing
  • Fault remains after sensor replacement

Possible causes

  • Problem with the sensing element or sensor electronics
  • Heater or power-supply fault
  • Compromised connector, cable or earth connection
  • Communication with the engine control unit is interrupted
  • An exhaust leak or operating state complicates interpretation
  • AdBlue dosing or the SCR system affects the reading
  • Incorrect initialisation, adaptation or software version

Why a NOx code can have several causes

A NOx sensor measures exhaust values within a complex system. Incorrect dosing, an ineffective catalyst or a leak can produce abnormal readings even when the sensor itself is not the only cause.

Software versions and manufacturer-specific strategies can also affect when a fault is logged.

Sensor fault or system response?

A sensor-circuit fault, an implausible signal and a measured high nitrogen-oxide concentration point diagnostics in different directions. The exact code description and status therefore matter more than a brief internet summary.

After sensor replacement, vehicle-specific initialisation, adaptation or another plausibility test drive may also be needed. We check whether this applies to the particular vehicle.

Recurring fault

NOx fault persists even with a new sensor?

A new sensor does not resolve power-supply, communication, exhaust or SCR causes. Part number, installation position, heating, wiring and measurement context therefore belong in the same assessment.

  2. 02Power supply and communication
  3. 03SCR system context

For a vehicle-specific cost estimate, prepare fault codes, the complete warning message and previous repair details. Optionally include a photo of the registration document with personal details covered.

Process

From vehicle details to a technical decision.

  1. 01

Record vehicle details, display message, exact code description and repair history.

  2. 02

Establish the fault status, freeze-frame data and affected sensor's position.

  3. 03

Check connectors, wiring, power supply, heating and communication.

  4. 04

Check the live NOx reading for plausibility under suitable operating conditions.

  5. 05

Distinguish sensor-related causes from exhaust leaks, AdBlue dosing and SCR performance.

  6. 06

After repair or adaptation, check the fault memory and the measurement chain.

For your enquiry

These vehicle details help us assess the situation.

  • Make, model and year of manufacture
  • Engine, power output and transmission
  • VIN, if needed to identify the exact control unit or equipment
  • Current fault codes or diagnostic report
  • Photo of the warning message on the display
  • Details of modifications, repairs or previous software work
  • NOx codes and pre-/post-SCR readings, if available

Technical limits

What needs clarifying before work starts.

  • A NOx code does not automatically mean that only the sensor is faulty.
  • Without live data and checks of related systems, replacing parts may be unnecessary.
  • Installation position and operating state determine how a reading should be interpreted.
  • Clearing faults does not replace efficiency or plausibility checks.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about NOx sensor diagnostics.

Does a NOx code always mean the sensor is faulty?

No. Power supply, heating, wiring, communication, an exhaust leak or the SCR system may also be involved.

Does P2200 always mean a NOx sensor fault?

The exact manufacturer-specific code description must be checked. Even when the code points to a sensor circuit, power supply, wiring and communication are part of the diagnosis.

Can a new NOx sensor need adaptation?

Depending on the vehicle, coding, adaptation or learned values may be relevant. This is checked for the specific vehicle.

Why does the fault return immediately?

The cause may still be present, or a reset or system check may not have been completed correctly.

Is NOx related to AdBlue?

Yes. NOx sensors monitor the effectiveness of the SCR system, which uses AdBlue dosing.

What information should I send?

Vehicle details, fault codes, the display message and, if available, live readings from the NOx sensors.

Fault codes

The fault codes most often seen here.

This overview links standardised OBD codes to the system they indicate. The code is the starting point for diagnosis — assessment requires contextual data and live readings.

NOx sensors

NOx sensors sit in the hot exhaust stream. These codes report circuit, signal or plausibility problems. A sensor code does not automatically mean the sensor has failed.

P2200
NOx sensor—circuit (bank 1, sensor 1).
P2201
NOx sensor—range/performance (bank 1, sensor 1).
P2202
NOx sensor—signal low (bank 1, sensor 1).
P2203
NOx sensor—signal high (bank 1, sensor 1).
P2204
NOx sensor—intermittent/erratic signal (bank 1, sensor 1).
P229E
NOx sensor—circuit (bank 1, sensor 2).
P229F
NOx sensor—range/performance (bank 1, sensor 2).

A fault code identifies what the control unit has assessed, not the failed component or the repair required. Manufacturer-specific codes may have different meanings. The vehicle’s actual condition must be assessed using fault memory, freeze-frame data and live readings together.
