01 / Symptoms

Oil in the engine V is an indication, not a completed diagnosis.

The visible oil and the actual leak source may be in different places. The repair route is therefore set only after a traceable assessment.

Observation

Typical symptoms

  • Oil visibly collects in the engine V between the cylinder banks
  • Oil traces run down from the upper or rear area of the engine
  • An oil smell or visible residue in the engine bay
  • The engine-oil level drops and needs to be checked or topped up more often
  • A workshop has identified the oil-cooler or heat-exchanger area as a possible source
  • Traces have reappeared after an earlier repair and the cause needs to be reassessed
Assessment

Possible causes

  • Aged or leaking seals between the oil-to-water heat exchanger and the engine block
  • A leak in the heat exchanger itself, if this is actually confirmed by the findings
  • Other sealing points above or around the engine V
  • Oil residue from an earlier leak or repair that has not yet been clearly attributed
  • Unsuitable, incomplete or incorrectly fitted parts after previous work

02 / Parts options

Two clear packages. One professional workshop process.

You decide who supplies the parts. Before the appointment, we clarify what matches the vehicle and belongs to the agreed dismantling scope.

Package AYour own complete kit

Bringing your own parts: what we clarify before the appointment

You can source a suitable complete kit yourself and bring it to the appointment. The oil cooler, seals, fasteners, part numbers and vehicle fitment must be agreed in advance. This helps prevent a vehicle-specific part from being missing after dismantling.

The price for this option covers the agreed workshop scope and approved consumables. We cannot make a general assurance about the origin, quality or completeness of parts sourced by the customer. If anything is unclear during the preliminary check, we resolve it before the workshop appointment.

The oil cooler, seals, fasteners and part numbers are agreed in advance.

Package BGenuine parts

Package with genuine Mercedes parts through MG AutoTech

If requested, MG AutoTech sources the vehicle-specific oil cooler, affected seals and required fasteners as genuine Mercedes parts. Any additional individual parts belonging to the agreed dismantling scope are determined from the vehicle data before the appointment.

This package costs more than labour alone with a suitable complete kit supplied by the customer because MG AutoTech sources the genuine parts and prepares the material scope. There is no fixed online price: you receive a specific assessment after the vehicle, parts and findings have been checked.

MG AutoTech matches the oil cooler and associated genuine parts to the vehicle.

03 / Technical assessment

Complete oil-cooler replacement rather than seals alone.

Access, cleanliness, parts planning and assembly together determine whether the deep-mounted oil cooler can be replaced completely and the exposed area sealed professionally.

Why the complete OM642 oil-cooler replacement involves so much work

The OM642 is a V6 diesel engine. Its oil-to-water heat exchanger is not freely accessible on the outside of the engine; it sits in the engine V between the cylinder banks. Intake and ancillary components above it must be removed in an orderly way to reach the area. Lines, connections, sealing surfaces and open passages must be kept clean and protected throughout.

The quality of the repair therefore depends on more than the seal. A traceable dismantling process, clean sealing surfaces, suitable parts, correct assembly and the subsequent checks are equally important. A fixed labour-time estimate would not be reliable without inspecting the vehicle and the findings.

  • Deep-mounted heat exchanger in the engine V
  • Several components sit above the repair area
  • Cleanliness around oil and coolant passages is essential
  • The parts and fastener scope is planned for the specific vehicle
01

Find the leak source before replacing parts

Oil traces in the engine V are consistent with the known sealing area, but do not prove the cause on their own. The actual leak point is assessed before the repair scope is set.

02

Complete oil-cooler replacement

The oil-to-water heat exchanger is replaced as a complete unit, together with the affected seals and required fasteners within the agreed dismantling scope.

03

Mechanical workshop work

The oil-cooler area sits deep in the engine V. Components above it must be removed in an orderly way, protected and then reassembled professionally.

80,000 to 150,000 km: workshop experience, not a replacement interval

In our workshop experience, comparable OM642 enquiries often arise at roughly 80,000 to 150,000 kilometres. This range is not a fixed replacement interval. It means neither that every vehicle in this range will leak nor that a vehicle outside it is excluded.

Mileage, age, thermal load, maintenance, previous work and the actual condition of the seals all interact. Visible traces, changes in the oil level and the technical assessment remain decisive, not mileage alone.

Oil-cooler seal or another OM642 leak source?

Oil in the engine V, traces at the rear of the engine or an oil smell can be consistent with the oil-cooler sealing area. The OM642 can, however, also leak from other points. Oil may spread and become visible somewhere other than its original source.

That is why we do not sell an oil-cooler replacement solely on the basis of a photo or mileage figure. Before approval, we assess the vehicle, any previous diagnosis and the visible oil path. If the findings indicate another cause, the work is not artificially expanded to include the oil cooler.

04 / Workshop process

From visible oil traces to an agreed repair.

The specific scope follows the vehicle and the actual findings.
  1. 01

We record the vehicle data, OM642 engine version, mileage, symptoms and previous diagnosis.

  2. 02

We compare the available findings and visible oil path with the planned repair scope without prematurely ruling out other leak sources.

  3. 03

We select the parts-supply option: a suitable customer-supplied complete kit, or an oil cooler and associated genuine Mercedes parts sourced by MG AutoTech.

  4. 04

We agree the binding repair and material scope before the appointment.

  5. 05

We access the oil-cooler area professionally and protect open oil and coolant passages from contamination.

  6. 06

We replace the complete oil-to-water heat exchanger, along with the affected seals and required fasteners within the agreed dismantling scope.

  7. 07

We reassemble the components professionally within the agreed repair scope.

05 / Prepare your enquiry

These details turn an assumption into a job we can assess.

The more complete the details, the more accurately the parts option, scope, price and appointment window can be agreed before dismantling.

Please send
  • Mercedes model and series
  • Year of manufacture and exact engine version
  • For genuine Mercedes parts: the VIN after our response, through the agreed contact channel
  • Current mileage
  • Description of the oil leak, oil smell and changes in the oil level
  • Any statement or diagnostic report from a previous workshop
  • Photos of the visible oil path or engine area, if they can be taken safely
  • Preferred parts option: your own complete kit, genuine parts through MG AutoTech, or not yet decided
To be clarified before approval
  • Mileage alone confirms neither the leak source nor the need for repair.
  • Not every OM642 oil leak originates in the oil-cooler or heat-exchanger area.
  • A customer-supplied complete kit must be checked for vehicle fitment and the agreed scope before the appointment.
  • The service covers the complete oil-cooler replacement; oil leaks outside the agreed oil-cooler and dismantling area are not automatically part of this job.
  • Price and duration depend on the vehicle version, parts option, previous work and the identified scope.
  • This does not create a guarantee against every future leak at other sealing points in the engine.

06 / FAQs

Clear answers about the complete OM642 oil-cooler replacement.

01Does every OM642 oil leak come from the oil-cooler seal?

No. Oil in the engine V is consistent with this sealing area, but other leak sources can also cause oil traces around the upper or rear part of the engine. The leak point is assessed before the final repair scope is set.

02Do you replace only the seals or the complete oil cooler?

This service replaces the complete oil cooler, or oil-to-water heat exchanger. The affected seals and required fasteners within the agreed dismantling scope are also renewed. It is not a seals-only replacement.

03Can I buy the parts myself and bring them?

Yes. The complete kit you bring must contain the correct oil cooler together with the agreed seals and fasteners. Part numbers, fitment and completeness are clarified before the appointment.

04Which parts does MG AutoTech use in its parts package?

When MG AutoTech supplies the parts, we use a vehicle-specific genuine Mercedes oil cooler, affected genuine seals and the required fasteners within the agreed dismantling scope.

05Why does the genuine-parts package cost more?

With this option, MG AutoTech sources the vehicle-specific genuine Mercedes parts and prepares the agreed material scope. The total price is therefore higher than labour alone with suitable customer-supplied parts.

06How much does a complete OM642 oil-cooler replacement cost?

A reliable price requires vehicle identification, leak findings, the parts option and the repair scope. First send the model, year of manufacture, engine version, mileage and any photos. If the full VIN is needed to identify parts, we will then agree a suitable way for you to send it.

07How long does the repair take?

The duration depends on the vehicle version, condition, previous work, parts scope and findings. We therefore do not publish a general time estimate; the appointment window is agreed for the specific job.

08Is 80,000 to 150,000 km a fixed replacement interval?

No. This is a workshop observation from comparable enquiries, not a maintenance interval. Some vehicles show this pattern earlier, later or not at all. Visible traces and diagnosis are what matter.

09Which vehicles with an OM642 can you work on?

The engine designation alone is not enough to confirm suitability. We use the vehicle data to check the series, engine variant, vehicle condition and parts fitment. If the full VIN is needed, we will request it through the agreed channel after the initial enquiry.

10What happens if another leak source is found?

The repair scope is then not automatically set to include the oil cooler. We explain the findings and agree the technically appropriate next step before carrying out any additional work.
