Chip tuning & Stage 1
Software optimisation based on the engine, transmission, software version and vehicle condition.
Fiat · Stuttgart · Abarth
Alongside the familiar Bosch families, Fiat relies heavily on Marelli control units. This noticeably changes reading methods and scope for work, so identifying the fitted unit is deliberately the first step.
Work on Fiat is part of the documented service scope. The scope is still checked for each vehicle.
Service scope
Every service starts in the same order: check the vehicle details, assess the fault, establish technical feasibility, then carry out the work. ECU and TCU access, unlocking, diagnostics and software work are considered separately because they have different requirements.
Software optimisation based on the engine, transmission, software version and vehicle condition.
Check filter loading, differential pressure, regeneration history and sensors.
Identification, readout, bench/boot access, backup and programming.
Check dosing, fluid-quality warnings and no-restart warnings before the vehicle is left unable to start.
Check fault memory, live data and the surrounding systems before making any decision.
Vehicle assessment
These three cases can look similar from the outside but differ greatly in technical terms. The assessment determines the work involved, the scope and what is realistically worthwhile.
500, Panda, Punto and Tipo, plus Doblò and Ducato. On the Ducato, the body type — panel van, camper or box body — determines the sensible approach.
Factory performance versions with dedicated calibration and boost behaviour. They are assessed separately from the base model.
Ducato-based campers often have older software of unknown origin. The actual version is read and documented before any work.
Systems
The fitted system determines the approach, not the badge. These are the units that feature most often in Fiat enquiries.
A characteristic control-unit family in many MultiJet engines, with access methods that differ from Bosch standards.
Also fitted to several Fiat diesel generations, depending on engine and year of manufacture.
The central unit for comfort, access and the immobiliser. Starting and key issues often lead here.
Engines & transmissions
The engine designation alone says little about the outcome. Condition, software version and transmission also matter, which is why a pre-check always comes first.
Diesel engines across almost the entire range. Enquiries often concern particulate filters, EGR and recurring fault codes.
Small turbocharged petrol engines with limited headroom, where condition matters more than the engine type.
Typical fault patterns
These patterns recur. They are a starting point for diagnostics, not a remote diagnosis or a substitute for inspecting the specific vehicle.
Normal for Marelli units. It does not mean the unit is faulty, but that a different access method is needed.
Leads to the body computer and key recognition. Proof of ownership is required for work on these systems.
Before we confirm the work
Without these details, any statement about feasibility is a guess. With them, we can usually say before the appointment whether work is possible and within what scope.

FAQ
Not necessarily. OBD is often not the right method for Marelli units. Bench or boot access is then used; it takes more work, but is a normal procedure, not evidence of a defect.
It depends on total weight, body conversion and actual use. With a heavy conversion, the aim is usually drivability and behaviour under load, not peak power. The scope is chosen accordingly.
The condition before and after the work is compared where possible. Interventions on Fiats often lead to secondary immobiliser and comfort-network faults, which must be assessed separately from engine issues.

Send your vehicle details and describe the issue or your goal. MG AutoTech assesses the technical options before recommending an appointment or further work.
