Performance engineering
Calibration beyond the standard configuration, matched to the hardware and intended use.
Mercedes-AMG · Stuttgart
An AMG is not simply a Mercedes with a larger engine. Its engines are built separately, use dedicated software and have torque management extending into the transmission. Treating it like the standard model leads to the wrong assumptions. The actual software is therefore read and documented before discussing the scope of any work.
Work on AMG is part of the documented service scope. The scope is still checked for each vehicle.
Service scope
Every service starts in the same order: check the vehicle details, assess the fault, establish technical feasibility, then carry out the work. ECU and TCU access, unlocking, diagnostics and software work are considered separately because they have different requirements.
Calibration beyond the standard configuration, matched to the hardware and intended use.
Software optimisation based on the engine, transmission, software version and vehicle condition.
Shift logic, torque authorisation and drivability matched to the engine software.
Make locked engine control units readable and writable, with an original software backup.
Read the removed control unit when OBD access is not possible.
Save a documented original software version as a possible route back; assess restorability for the individual vehicle.
Identification, readout, bench/boot access, backup and programming.
Check fault memory, live data and the surrounding systems before making any decision.
Vehicle assessment
These three cases can look similar from the outside but differ greatly in technical terms. The assessment determines the work involved, the scope and what is realistically worthwhile.
Trim packages with AMG body parts are technically standard vehicles. They belong on the Mercedes-Benz page because the engine, transmission and software are standard.
Vehicles with an AMG engine and AMG calibration. This page’s scope applies: dedicated software, transmission authorisation and component-protection limits.
Vehicles with changed hardware or third-party software. The complete starting condition, including exhaust, charge-air routing and cooling, is recorded before an assessment can be given.
Systems
The fitted system determines the approach, not the badge. These are the units that feature most often in Mercedes-AMG enquiries.
Dedicated calibration with its own boost, exhaust-temperature and component-protection limits. Software from the standard version of the same model series is incompatible and is not used.
AMG transmissions have dedicated shift logic and torque authorisation. Changing the engine calibration without adapting the transmission can cause limiting or uneven shifts near the operating limits.
AMG drive modes act on the engine, transmission, exhaust valves, suspension and stability control together. A single changed value therefore affects several systems and is not assessed in isolation.
Engines & transmissions
The engine designation alone says little about the outcome. Condition, software version and transmission also matter, which is why a pre-check always comes first.
A highly boosted four-cylinder used in compact AMG models. Factory calibration already uses much of the reserve, leaving less extra scope than on many larger engines. Cooling and charge-air temperature also matter.
A V8 with turbochargers between the cylinder banks, used across many AMG models. Enquiries concern calibration, transmission authorisation and exhaust and oil temperatures in actual use.
An inline-six with an integrated starter-generator and 48-volt system. The electrical side participates in torque coordination, so it is read during every assessment rather than treated as an accessory.
Typical fault patterns
These patterns recur. They are a starting point for diagnostics, not a remote diagnosis or a substitute for inspecting the specific vehicle.
Component protection intervenes before temperatures become critical. A log from actual driving shows whether cooling, charge-air temperature, fuel quality or unsuitable software is responsible.
A classic pattern when the engine calibration has been changed but transmission authorisation has not. Both units are assessed together so that the vehicle’s systems do not work against each other.
Common on used AMG vehicles. Without a backed-up original version, neither restoration nor a reliable assessment is possible, so reading the unit comes first.
Before we confirm the work
Without these details, any statement about feasibility is a guess. With them, we can usually say before the appointment whether work is possible and within what scope.

FAQ
No. AMG vehicles have dedicated engine calibration and torque management extending into the transmission. Software from the standard version is technically incompatible and is not used.
Usually, yes. If the engine calibration changes but transmission authorisation does not, limiting or uneven shifts near the operating limits can follow. The actual vehicle and transmission determine whether adaptation is needed.
Yes, provided the original software was backed up before the work; that is precisely why it is saved. If a vehicle arrives with third-party software, the first check is whether an original version still exists.
Performance-related changes for road use require inspection and registration. Without registration, operating approval and insurance cover may cease to apply. The approval process is discussed before the work, not afterwards.
