Land Rover & Range Rover: exhaust aftertreatment, suspension and diagnostics.

Land Rover and Range Rover bring together three factors that reinforce one another: high vehicle weight, exhaust aftertreatment pushed to its limits by short trips, and an extensive electrical network with air suspension. A fault therefore rarely has just one cause. Reading only the fault code and replacing a part often brings the same vehicle back a few weeks later.

For Land Rover, a technical enquiry is required. Scope and feasibility are established on the specific vehicle before any commitment is made.

Service scope

What MG AutoTech does on Land Rover vehicles.

Every service starts in the same order: check the vehicle details, assess the fault, establish technical feasibility, then carry out the work. ECU and TCU access, unlocking, diagnostics and software work are considered separately because they have different requirements.

Land Rover

AdBlue diagnostics

Check dosing, fluid-quality warnings and no-restart warnings before the vehicle is left unable to start.

Land Rover

SCR system diagnostics

Measure the catalyst, dosing unit and exhaust aftertreatment control loop as an interconnected system.

Land Rover

NOx sensor diagnostics

Compare sensor readings with actual values rather than replacing the sensor on suspicion.

Land Rover

Vehicle diagnostics

Check fault memory, live data and the surrounding systems before making any decision.

Land Rover

Chip tuning & Stage 1

Software optimisation based on the engine, transmission, software version and vehicle condition.

Land Rover

Vehicle coding

Code equipment, comfort functions and retrofits according to the vehicle configuration.

Vehicle assessment

Standard, performance model or already modified?

These three cases can look similar from the outside but differ greatly in technical terms. The assessment determines the work involved, the scope and what is realistically worthwhile.

Standard vehicles

Defender, Discovery, Evoque, Velar and Range Rover models in their original configuration. Exhaust aftertreatment or suspension electronics are the most common reason for an enquiry.

SV and SVR versions

More powerful factory variants with their own calibration and revised cooling. They are assessed separately from the base variant.

Modified vehicles

Vehicles with suspension lifts, different tyres, auxiliary electrics or expedition conversions. These changes affect suspension control and the electrical network, so they are recorded before any software discussion.

Systems

The control units that matter on Land Rover.

The fitted system determines the approach, not the badge. These are the units that feature most often in Land Rover enquiries.

01

Exhaust aftertreatment on diesel ranges

The particulate filter, SCR system and AdBlue dosing form a control loop that depends on regular regeneration. Predominantly short-trip use systematically pushes this loop to its limits. This is a usage pattern, not a defect in itself.

02

Air suspension and self-levelling

Height sensors, valve block and compressor form a separate system with its own control unit. Symptoms range from sinking on one side to complete loss of self-levelling, and the cause is rarely exactly where the code points.

03

Electrical-network and infotainment control

These vehicles have many networked modules. If communication fails, several systems report faults at once. The bus is therefore read in context before an individual module is suspected.

Engines & transmissions

The Land Rover ranges we receive the most enquiries about.

The engine designation alone says little about the outcome. Condition, software version and transmission also matter, which is why a pre-check always comes first.

Range

Ingenium diesel (2.0 and 3.0)

The current diesel generation. Enquiries almost always concern the particulate filter, SCR system and AdBlue dosing, and whether the actual driving pattern suits the exhaust aftertreatment system.

Range

Older 3.0 V6 diesels

The diesel generation before Ingenium, still found in many vehicles. The particulate filter, exhaust gas recirculation and condition of ancillary units are the main focus.

Range

5.0 supercharged V8

The supercharged eight-cylinder engine in more powerful versions. Vehicle weight, cooling and transmission torque authorisation determine the sensible scope of software work.

Typical fault patterns

The issues Land Rover vehicles come in with.

These patterns recur. They are a starting point for diagnostics, not a remote diagnosis or a substitute for inspecting the specific vehicle.

Fault pattern

Regeneration repeatedly stops before completion

Usually a usage issue: regeneration needs a certain driving distance that short trips do not provide. The actual driving pattern is considered before parts are replaced.

Fault pattern

Vehicle sits unevenly or low on one side

This leads to the air suspension, but not automatically to the air spring. Height sensors, valve block and compressor output are measured during operation because speculative replacement is particularly expensive here.

Fault pattern

Several system warnings after a cold start

Often a power-supply issue. The many networked modules create a high quiescent current. If voltage drops too far during starting, several systems report warnings at once. Battery and quiescent-current checks therefore come first.

Before we confirm the work

The details needed for a Land Rover.

Without these details, any statement about feasibility is a guess. With them, we can usually say before the appointment whether work is possible and within what scope.

  • Model and range (for example Defender, Discovery, Range Rover Sport)
  • Year of manufacture and engine
  • For diesels: AdBlue level and exact warning message
  • Usual driving pattern, especially the proportion of short trips
  • Whether air suspension is fitted
  • Modifications such as suspension lifts, tyres or auxiliary electrics
  • Vehicle identification number

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Land Rover.

My Range Rover regenerates constantly. Is the particulate filter faulty?

Not necessarily. More often, the driving pattern does not suit the exhaust aftertreatment system: regeneration needs an uninterrupted driving distance. Filter loading, differential pressure and regeneration history are assessed before any component is replaced.

Can DPF or AdBlue be disabled on a Land Rover?

Not for use on public roads. On road vehicles, emissions-related systems are measured, repaired and returned to their intended operating condition.

The vehicle sits unevenly overnight. Does the air spring need replacing?

Only after measurement. The height sensor, valve block and compressor are just as possible as the air spring itself. The pressure pattern during operation shows which part is affected.

Does this also apply to Range Rover?

Yes. Range Rover is the luxury range of the same brand. Model ranges, engines and systems overlap extensively, which is why both are covered together on this page.
