How much does Stage 1 cost for a BMW with a B48 or B58?The same-day appointment starts at €799. The final price depends on the vehicle, fitted control unit, required access and technical condition, and is confirmed before the work is authorised. The described process includes identification, unlocking the control unit, backing up the original software, Stage 1 calibration, checking transmission torque authorisation and a verification drive with data assessment. Additional work, such as a repair identified during the check, is discussed beforehand and never charged without agreement.
How long does the appointment actually take?Around 5 hours on average, all within one appointment on one day. Most of that time is not spent writing software, but on what comes before and after: reading, backing up, checking, driving and assessing the data. If the vehicle shows a problem that needs repairing first, the appointment is stopped rather than pushed through.
Why does the control unit need unlocking in the first place? For some production years and software versions, BMW does not allow write access through the diagnostic socket. Without unlocking, the software therefore cannot be read or written back. Identification at the start of the appointment establishes which method is possible for the specific vehicle.
My BMW was built in 07/2020 or later. Is any work still possible?Yes, within the same appointment. From build date 07/2020, newer control-unit generations block writing through the diagnostic socket. That is why owners often hear “not possible” or “send the control unit away; it takes a few days”. Here, unlocking, reading, backing up and writing are carried out directly on the fitted unit. The required access method and resulting price are confirmed after identifying the vehicle and control unit.
Does the control unit need to be removed? That depends on the fitted unit and is established during identification at the start of the appointment. Both methods are part of the process and fit within the same day. The difference is in the work involved, not the length of the appointment.
Can the standard configuration still be restored?Yes. The original software is read and backed up before every write operation, precisely so it can be restored. Nothing is written without an original backup, even when time is short.
Does the BMW transmission also need adjusting?Often, yes. The transmission control unit has its own torque ceiling and limits torque silently, without logging a fault. The vehicle then feels sluggish despite the higher request. Comparing requested and authorised torque on the vehicle shows whether adjustment is needed.
Does the same-day appointment also cover M models with the S58?Yes. M control units are consistently locked, so access is more involved than on the B58, but the process remains the same. Unlocking and software work take place within one appointment on one day.
Are DPF, EGR or AdBlue disabled? Not as part of this same-day package for road vehicles. Special DPF, EGR and AdBlue enquiries are assessed separately according to the vehicle and intended use. The relevant service pages explain the requirements and alternatives.
What about pop & bangs, burble or a hardcut limiter? These are not offered here. Pop & bangs and burble use post-injection into the exhaust tract and put stress on the catalyst and turbine. A hardcut limiter removes the very limits that protect the engine and transmission. For different response and shift behaviour, the route is through transmission torque authorisation.
Does the modification need to be registered? For a vehicle registered in Germany, a performance-related software change requires inspection and registration of the modification. Without registration, the vehicle’s operating approval and insurance cover may cease to apply. The inspection process is discussed before the work, not afterwards.
