We enable write access on a supported newer BMW Bosch engine ECU after identifying it first. The standard unlock-only service costs €150 per control unit worked on, including removal and refitting, and is carried out on the same working day following an appointment and successful initial assessment.
S68 is subject only to the special pricing: €500 per ECU or €899 for both control units. Same-working-day processing is not generally promised for S68.
An unlock is not chiptuning. It creates the technical prerequisite for subsequent software work. Stage 1, a tuning map, an MHD, MG Flasher or bootmod3 licence, an adapter, repairs and further work are not included in the unlock price.
Assessment
Newer BMW DME and DDE control units can block write access. A supported tuning or service file then cannot simply be transferred through the OBD diagnostic socket, even if the vehicle and engine are generally supported by the chosen platform.
The unlock is performed as a separate step. Subsequent OBD programming follows only when the vehicle, ECU, software version, licence, unlock type and map are compatible. Manufacturer updates, a full-stock reset or relocking can change the status and require another assessment or unlock.
The professional tool provider’s current reference list includes petrol ECUs MG1CS003, MG1CS024, MG1CS049, MG1CS201 and MG1CS221, plus diesel ECUs MD1CP002, MD1CP032, MD1CS001, MD1CS015 and MD1CS115.
These ten codes are candidates for assessment, not a blanket commitment that MG AutoTech can work on them. Specific approval depends on the processor, hardware version, software ID and the method available to us. MG1CS221, MD1CS015 and MD1CS115 are marked as bench-only in the primary source reviewed.
Depending on the engine and fitted Bosch ECU, the current list covers BMW 1 to 8 Series, M2, M3, M4, M5 and M8, X1 to X7 including M models, XM and Z4. Selected MINI models with Bosch MG1 are also assessed after ECU identification.
The listed engine families include B37, B38, B46/B48, B47/N47, B57/N57, B58, S58, N63, S63, S68 and N74. Common enquiries include M135i, M240i, 330i, M340i, M440i, 540i, 840i, X3/X4 M40i, Z4 M40i, M2 G87, M3 G80/G81, M4 G82/G83, X3 M F97 and X4 M F98.
After a successful unlock, supported vehicle, DME and software combinations allow compatible maps to be flashed later through the OBD interface. Depending on the engine and platform, options may include MHD, MG Flasher or bootmod3.
Among the newer platforms documented here, MHD lists B58 and S58. MG Flasher lists B46/B48, B58, S58, N63, S63 and selected MINI MG1 applications. bootmod3 lists B46/B48, B58, S58, N63 and S63 among others. The app list is not a general approval: the vehicle, DME, ROM, unlock provider and type, licence and requested function must each be compatible.
BMW diesels with B37, B47 or B57 may require an MD1 unlock. However, no blanket compatibility with MHD, MG Flasher or bootmod3 is claimed for these diesels.
The often-quoted 06/2020 or 07/2020 threshold is only a guide. Even an earlier-built vehicle can have protected software after a BMW software update. The DME production date, hardware and software ID are decisive.
2025+ BMW models with B58 Gen 3 and Vitesco DME9 are explicitly outside the Bosch MG1/MD1 list described here. Supported non-S68 applications are charged at the standard price per control unit worked on. For S68, the price is €500 per ECU or €899 for both control units.
ECU Unlock enables write access; it is not a finished performance tune. The standard €150 per ECU includes removal and refitting, but not Stage 1, a map, platform licence, adapter, repair or other additional work. S68 follows the separately listed pricing.

Supported BMW petrol-engine, DME, ROM and licence combinations allow compatible maps to be flashed later via OBD. The right platform is not guessed; it is checked against vehicle and ECU data before the appointment.

No blanket support for these three consumer platforms is promised for B37, B47 and B57 diesels. An MD1 unlock may be technically possible, but the subsequent writing method is determined separately for the vehicle.
