What is SBC?

SBC stands for Sensotronic Brake Control, an electrohydraulic braking system developed by Daimler and Bosch. It was first used in the SL (R230) from October 2001 and later fitted to other model series.

Unlike a conventional braking system, the master cylinder is separated from the brake circuit during normal operation. The pedal does not act hydraulically on the wheels directly; its input is assessed electronically — hence the term brake-by-wire.

This design explains why SBC messages need a different assessment from an ordinary brake warning: it is an active, electronically controlled system with its own pressure supply and control unit.

How SBC works technically

A pedal-travel sensor and pressure sensor measure how quickly and firmly the driver brakes. Together with other signals, the SBC control unit uses this to calculate the appropriate brake pressure for each wheel individually.

Pressure comes not from the driver’s foot but from an electrically driven piston pump, which keeps an accumulator at around 140 to 160 bar. Four independent pressure modulators, each with an inlet and outlet valve, distribute pressure individually to the wheels.

A pedal-travel simulator provides the familiar feedback so the pedal still feels normal. ABS and ESP also operate on this basis.

  • Pedal-travel and pressure sensors capture the driver’s braking request
  • SBC control unit calculates target pressure for each wheel
  • Piston pump and accumulator maintain around 140–160 bar
  • Four pressure modulators control each wheel individually
  • Pedal-travel simulator produces familiar pedal feel

Hydraulic fallback mode

If electronic control fails, SBC switches to a hydraulic fallback mode. The vehicle can still brake, but not with equivalent performance: substantially more pedal force may be needed and stopping distance may increase.

That is precisely why an SBC warning must not be treated as minor. The fact that the vehicle can still brake does not mean the system is working correctly.

If only the pump fails, the accumulator may sustain electronic operation for a while. This also calls for assessment and is not a condition for continued long-term use.

Which Mercedes model series use SBC?

SBC was fitted mainly to the E-Class (W211) and CLS (W219) built from 2003 to 2006, and the SL (R230) built from 2001 to 2011. The SLR and Maybach also used the system.

From 2006, higher-volume models — notably the E-Class — returned to conventional hydraulic braking. SBC remained in use longer on lower-volume vehicles.

Whether your particular vehicle has SBC and the system’s condition are established from vehicle data and diagnosis — not the year of manufacture alone.

  • E-Class W211: 2003–2006
  • CLS W219: 2003–2006
  • SL R230: 2001–2011
  • SLR and Maybach: also fitted with SBC

Our SBC service: counter reset only

For Mercedes SBC, MG AutoTech only offers the counter reset on the vehicle in Stuttgart. The price is a fixed €50; there is no second price path or negotiation.

We do not carry out mechanical work on the hydraulic unit, control unit, sensors or braking system. We also do not accept removed SBC units for repair by post.

For appointment preparation, please write via WhatsApp. If you already know the fault code, such as C249F or C2498, you can send it directly.

A clear safety warning without panic

SBC does more than issue a service reminder. When the situation becomes more critical, a red stop message such as “Bremse defekt! Anhalten!” appears, meaning “Brake fault — stop the vehicle”. This is a clearly different state from “Service Bremse! Werkstatt aufsuchen!”, which means the braking system needs attention at a workshop.

A brake warning must always be taken seriously. If braking feels reduced, red warnings appear or pedal feel is unusual, the vehicle should not continue in normal traffic.

After diagnosis, MG AutoTech provides an understandable assessment without presenting an untested vehicle as safe.

The red stop warning is the clearest level — continuing to drive is not an option.

The A7/3 hydraulic unit

This assembly provides pressure in the diagram: the electrically driven pump motor and accumulator sit on the hydraulic block with its valves. Fault codes concerning operating time, service thresholds and pressure supply relate to this assembly. Whether it can be repaired depends on its condition in the specific case — not the code alone.

Fault codes

SBC fault codes grouped by component.

The SBC control unit recognises several hundred diagnostic codes. The number alone is not decisive; the component it points to matters. This overview maps codes to the assemblies in the functional diagram.

Service and counter messages

These messages concern the hydraulic unit’s operating time or service threshold. They do not automatically indicate a failed component.

C249F
Check the operating time of the SBC hydraulic unit (A7/3).
C2498
Service threshold reached.
C235A
Service threshold reached.
C235C
Service threshold reached.
C2359
Service threshold reached.

Hydraulic unit and pressure accumulator (A7/3)

This is the assembly that supplies pressure in the functional diagram: the pump, pressure accumulator and hydraulic unit.

C2130
Hydraulic unit A7/3: internal fault.
C2131
Pressure accumulator faulty.
C2132
Pressure accumulator: check precharge pressure.

The diagnostic register also lists several pressure-supply faults and further internal hydraulic-unit faults in this group.

Individual wheel pressure regulators

These are the four pressure modulators in the diagram. Diagnosis distinguishes between front left, front right, rear left and rear right.

Each wheel has its own codes for hydraulic faults at the pressure regulator. The exact stored code identifies the wheel concerned.

Pedal travel sensor (B37/1)

The pedal sensor detects the driver’s braking request. If it fails, the control unit loses the input needed to calculate braking pressure.

C2494
Check the power supply to the pedal travel sensor (B37/1).

The diagnostic register contains over 30 pedal-sensor codes, chiefly reporting that the component is faulty.

Brake light switch (S9/1)

An often overlooked distinction: the brake light switch is a separate component, not part of the hydraulic unit. An SBC warning therefore does not necessarily originate in the braking unit itself.

C215C
Check component S9/1 (brake light switch).

The diagnostic register contains several similar codes for the brake light switch.

SBC control unit (A7/3n1)

These messages relate to the SBC control unit. The specific fault description distinguishes, for example, an internal fault from a request to check the wake-up procedure. This alone does not determine whether a component needs replacing.

C2100
Control unit A7/3n1 (SBC control unit): internal fault.
C2495
Check the wake-up procedure of control unit A7/3n1.

This is by far the largest group: more than 100 codes report an internal SBC control-unit fault.

CAN communication (N47-5)

SBC works together with ABS and ESP. Communication faults can therefore appear as SBC warnings even when the cause lies in the network or another control unit.

Several codes concern the CAN connection to ESP control unit N47-5.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Mercedes SBC counter reset.

What does the “Service Bremse! Werkstatt aufsuchen!” brake-service warning mean?

The vehicle is reporting a braking-system problem or service requirement. On SBC, this must be taken seriously.

What does fault code C249F mean?

C249F calls for the operating time of the SBC hydraulic unit (A7/3) to be checked. It therefore concerns the unit’s operating duration — on its own, it does not identify a faulty component. Diagnosis establishes what is happening in the specific vehicle.

What do C2498, C235A and C235C mean?

These codes report that a service threshold has been reached. They belong to the same group as C249F and concern the system’s service status, not automatically component damage.

Is C215C a braking-system fault?

Not necessarily. C215C refers to component S9/1, the brake-light switch. This is a separate component, not part of the hydraulic unit. An SBC message therefore does not necessarily mean the SBC unit itself is faulty.

Does MG AutoTech mechanically repair SBC units?

No. For Mercedes SBC, MG AutoTech only offers the counter reset on the vehicle. Mechanical work, refurbishment, repairs to hydraulics or control unit and mailed-in units are not part of our offer.

Is an SBC reset enough?

The offered service is exclusively the counter reset on the vehicle. It is not a substitute for mechanical repair or a brake inspection. For other causes or unusual brake behaviour, we do not offer mechanical SBC repair.

How much does the Mercedes SBC counter reset cost?

The Mercedes SBC counter reset costs a fixed, non-negotiable €50. The price applies to the reset on the vehicle in Stuttgart.

How do I arrange an appointment?

Please write exclusively via WhatsApp. State the model and year of manufacture; if you know an SBC fault code, send it along. Phone calls are not required for this service.

Can I mail in a removed SBC unit?

No. The counter reset is carried out only on the complete vehicle in Stuttgart. We do not offer mechanical repairs or a mail-in service for SBC units.

Can I keep driving with an SBC warning?

With an active brake warning or unusual braking performance, the vehicle should not continue normal use without checking. A red stop message such as “Bremse defekt! Anhalten!”, meaning “Brake fault — stop the vehicle”, is the clearest level — continuing to drive is not an option.

Which Mercedes models have SBC?

SBC was fitted mainly to the E-Class W211 and S211, CLS W219 and SL R230. Other SBC-equipped vehicles may also be supported. Assessment is based on the specific vehicle.

What information should I send via WhatsApp?

Please send the Mercedes model, year of manufacture and display message. You can also send a known fault code, such as C249F or C2498. This lets us prepare the counter-reset appointment accurately.

What happens after the work?

After the counter reset, our scope remains limited to that reset. It includes no mechanical refurbishment, no brake-system repair and no statement on general road safety.
